Sue: Again, your consciousness develops like the rest of your body at conception. However, it is very basic at that time and as your body grows and matures, it develops right along with it.

There are several levels of consciousness and one can develop these one by one from a low level to a high level. This is done by becoming a spiritual being by thinking about God and all of the things we have discussed in these books. Most people do not really develop beyond the first level or two of consciousness because they are too busy living their lives on almost an animal level. By that I mean that [they are] working in jobs that perhaps they do not like in order to achieve the resources of food and shelter and of course, some attainment of many material things.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the ups and downs of life which everyone has does develop higher levels of consciousness by a person living through a traumatic [event]. Your soul wants to grow. In order to grow, a human has to overcome some problems since life’s problems, sorrows, when you overcome them, leads to more material growth. That is why older people seem and are more mature than younger folks. They have seen the ups and downs of life and for the most part have overcome any problems.

But it all comes down to love and compassion for your fellow man. Not having developed love, real love, will keep a person’s consciousness at a low level. Why desire a higher consciousness? Because in order to climb the various levels of Heaven after your demise, you have to develop your consciousness. God, the Divine Intelligence, is the highest form of consciousness. Consciousness is your whole personality, the who you really are.

It is a combination of your spirit and your soul and not your physical body. It is very difficult for me to define consciousness since it is such a nebulous thing, almost without definition. It is what it is. I know that may not be a satisfactory definition; it is just high intelligence, again on a spiritual level.
